Synthesis And Development Of Conflict Frame Typology

Sarah Ogilvie

To investigate shifts in frame use over time, negotiator communication must be characterised using a set of frames. Although researchers have devised various systems of frame classifications, they are yet to reach agreement, not only on a common set of frames, but also on a common method of derivation and measurement. In examining three frame-related typologies (Donnellon & Gray, 1989; Pinkley, 1990; Wehr, 1979), several important issues emerged as to the way frame configurations have been conceptualised and utilised. This chapter critically analyses the way that researchers have invoked the conflict frame concept and have developed their typologies in conflict-related settings.
